How much should you tip? Quick guide by country
- 🇺🇸 USA & Canada — 15–20% is standard, 25%+ for exceptional service. Servers depend on tips for income here.
- 🇬🇧 UK & much of Europe — 10–12% if not included. Check the bill — many restaurants add a "service charge" automatically.
- 🇦🇪 UAE & Middle East — 10–15% expected at sit-down restaurants. Many bills include 10% service.
- 🇮🇳 India — 5–10% in casual places, 10–15% at upscale restaurants.
- 🇨🇳 China, 🇰🇷 South Korea, 🇯🇵 Japan — Tipping is unusual and can occasionally be considered rude. Don't tip.
- 🇦🇺 Australia & 🇳🇿 New Zealand — Tipping is optional; 10% for great service is appreciated but never expected.
Check the bill first
In Europe and parts of Asia, "service compris" / "service included" / "ХХ% service charge" is often printed at the bottom. If so, you're already tipping — adding more is optional, not customary.
How to split smartly
- Even split — Set "split between #" to the number of people. Each pays the same share including tip.
- Round up to a clean number — Toggle "Round total up" to avoid awkward $47.83-style amounts. Tiny extra tip, simpler math.
- Different orders per person — Split the tip evenly but pay your own food. Each person calculates: their food + (total tip ÷ number of people).
Tip
Works in any currency — just enter the bill in whatever you're being charged in. The math is the same.
